Families can use the contents of the pack to let their imaginations soar or they can use some of the suggested activities for more structured exploration.   Castlewood Canyon - Part of the Family Activity Pack Program

     Castlewood Canyon State Park is a Colorado state park near Franktown, Colorado. The park protects a unique part of Colorado's history (the Castlewood Canyon Dam). Nature lovers and groups enjoy environmental diversity on several hiking trails ranging from mild to moderate. The trails range from .5 to 4 miles and can be combined for longer journeys. The winding Cherry Creek flowing along the canyon floor provides wonderful rest stops. Pets, on a leash, are welcome on most trails, except the new East Canyon Preservation Area trail. The natural amphitheater and the Bridge Canyon Overlook gazebo perched on the edge of the canyon are unique places for weddings or other outdoor ceremonies. Casual groups and families enjoy the picnic areas at both entrances. Remnants of geologic and local history combine when the then Castlewood Dam burst in 1933, sending a 15-foot-high wave of water into Denver.      A popular watchable wildlife area, Mueller is home to abundant wildlife including elk, black bear, hawks, and mule deer. Mueller State Park has over 5,000 acres of spring-fed meadows, forested ridges and massive rocks of Pikes Peak Granite with several ponds that dot the landscape. The park supports a variety of plant-life ranging from native grasses and wildflowers to stands of spruce, fir, pine and aspen.   Colorado's Natural Wonder

     With the completion of the brand new 14,000 sq. foot Visitor Center sitting on the very edge of the Royal Gorge, once again the park is open on a daily basis. In keeping with a national park look, the new facility's deck overhang gives spectacular views of the gorge and the Bridge. A large gift shop and restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating for 200, complete with large fireplace, face the Royal Gorge. The Royal Rush Skycoaster is the only ride not affected by the fire (extra pay feature - weather permitting and seasonal operation). The Plaza Theater and Historical Expo will be re-opened in the spring of 2015. In addition, the much-loved Water Clock and a new large children's play area with a carousel will be added to the park. Installation of a new gig-back aerial gondola, and a new zip line, a twin-racing Zip Rider (extra pay feature - weather permitting and seasonal operation) taking guests 2,300 feet across the Royal Gorge, will begin in October with completion slated for January. Look for the new Bridge View BBQ and patio area on the Southside of the park to be finished by Spring 2015. The historic undertaking of rebuilding the park after the Royal Gorge Fire 2013 has taken a little over a year and the park will continue to keep adding attractions and features for a Grand Opening in the Spring of 2015. Our Bighorn Mountain Top Lodge was not directly affected by the fire but we are currently utilizing this space internally. This facility will be available for rentals in 2015.
